Book One in The Carlisle series

Author: Roslyn Sinclair

Narrated by Abby Craden

Description

What happens when the world’s fiercest fashion editor learns she’s pregnant—and her distracting assistant is the only one she can turn to? This wildly popular age-gap lesbian romance mixes humor and chaos with self-discovery.

Jules Moretti is newly single, an aspiring writer, and the hyper-competent assistant to the most powerful woman in fashion. It’s a tough job, but her ice queen boss won’t settle for less than perfection.

Vivian Carlisle helms the internationally revered fashion publication Du Jour. She might be smack in the middle of a messy divorce, but you have to make sacrifices to be the best. That’s what she tells herself, anyway.

When the unthinkable happens, Vivian’s regimented world is turned upside-down. Her life is about power, success, and dominance—not a baby!

This single, shocking moment throws boss and assistant together into an intimacy neither could have imagined. With their lives in chaos, every day brings a new challenge bigger than the last. But everything will work out…just so long as they don’t do anything totally ridiculous.

Like fall in love.

Truth and Measure is the first part of a two-book series. This slow-burn office romance is a steamy story of fashion, passion, and the power of the unexpected.

I read this for the I Heart Sapphic 2025 Reading Challenge for the prompt Quirky Characters.

Originally I was going to do this reread towards the end of the year but I read a book that put me through the emotional wringer so this got bumped up. The first life of this book started as a piece of fanfiction for The Devil Wears Prada (Miranda/Andy) by the same name. I LOVED this fanfic and was over the moon when I saw it was reworked as a two part series AND narrated by Abby Craden. Reading this book again was the perfect choice as a pallet cleanser.

    Quick Thoughts:
    – I adore the covers on both of these books
    – Both book are solely from Jules POV
    – Don’t be intimidated by the fashion industry aspect in this book, you get enough of a taste of it to be immersed in that world without needing a deep knowledge to understand what’s happening
    – When you see this series is tagged slow burn, don’t be deceived by the fact that they do get together in this book, there is so much unresolved conflict that it keeps that slow burn feel well into book two
    – I forgot about the whole Vivian saying they’d have a platonic relationship and Jules response of not really believing her. At first I was uncomfortable about that but as the story continues, I appreciated Jules being honest about her needs and then later I understood that Jules saw something in Vivian that had her believing the no sex statement was rooted in something else and not an aversion/distain towards sex
    – And on that note the love scenes are SCORCHING HOT. I always forget how wonderful Roslyn Sinclair is at crafting them until I start reading a book of hers
    – Allie is hilarious and my absolute favorite side character
    – No third act break up!
    – So a reread didn’t lessen my great dislike for Mark or my annoyance at Simon for how he acts like he’s Vivian’s perfect right hand man then does things the way he does in the end
    – Something I appreciate about this book is that while it is obvious that there is another book to complete their story, it doesn’t end on a cliffhanger and feels like a natural end. But make sure to have book two on hand. I started it immediately at 1am on a work night
    – Abby Craden is PERFECT for this book. She narrates love scenes wonderfully but can also do Vivian’s and Jules voices perfectly (a serious bonus considering who were the actresses that portrayed the movie characters this is based on)

Overall I am glad my reread of this is just as enjoyable as the first time I read it. This is a book that if you enjoy audiobooks you absolutely have to listen to it. It is excellent and now on my “I need to relax” list.
