I first read this in 2023 and it was a little difficult then after having to live through 2016-2020 in the United States but it was really really hard to reread it this year after the Racist Yam got elected again. The only reason I tried it and could get through it was the fact that Abby Craden was the narrator.
Quick Thoughts:
– I remember hearing about this book and how it was pulled a few months after it was first published to be rewritten a bit more different from the movie The American President (which this was a homage to.) You still get the flavor of that movie AND I AM HERE FOR IT
– There is something about a not-famous person sassing the famous person that I can’t get enough of
– And on that note, Emily is a great partner for Connie. She’s strong willed, confident in her personal and professional life, had been exposed to political and media life, and is willing to learn/change in positive ways
– Connie also shows she’s willing to learn and I loved that she understood what was important to herself very quickly
– Zack is a fun kid and I really liked all his scenes. He never came off as a short adult (just as a kid who grew up because of having to go through a lot) or is an insufferable jerk
– That dance scene always makes me swoon
– Love that these two go into the relationship with their eyes wide open to the challenges and public importance of their relationship
– The first time I read this, I was not expecting the last fourth of the book. Great drama that was just as good the second time
– This hits differently in 2025, showing how things could have been instead of how they are. I want to live in this book’s reality please
– Abby Craden is amazing and is on a very short list of narrators that could get me to listen to this book in 2025
Overall I adore this book. As I said before, it hits differently this time round but just as strongly in a hopeful way that’s in short supply right now. Lola Keeley is an excellent author that I highly recommend. If this book isn’t your cup of tea or might be too hard to stomach at the moment, I seriously suggest looking up one of her other books. She’s a delight.
