Description

An enemies-to-friends-to-lovers lesbian romance about finding heart, hope, and second chances you never thought you’d have.

Stella Carter is a former criminal prosecutor and new widow facing down middle age alone in Los Angeles. Without being a prestigious lawyer and someone’s wife, she’s not sure who she is anymore or where her life is headed.

When she invites her niece to move in with her, Stella accidentally reconnects with her former colleague, LAPD Captain Elizabeth Murphy. The woman is beautiful but cold; someone she was always at odds with on the job.

Surprisingly, Stella finds herself leaning on her niece and Elizabeth more and more to navigate her loss. But as time goes on, Stella can’t keep seeing Elizabeth and pretending she’s not attracted to her. Besides, there’s absolutely no way Elizabeth feels the same way. Is there?

Yes, I loved this book so much I read it twice in the same year.

    Quick Thoughts:
    – This book, hands down, has the BEST depiction of grief, and depicts that even not great/bad relationships can still devastate you in these tragic situations
    – For those who don’t know, this was originally a The Closer/Major Crimes fanfic
    – I am a huge fan of the fanfic this author writes to the point there’s one I read every year and I was thrilled to see she’s now publishing
    – No third act break up!
    – I absolutely adored watching these two idiots fall in love
    – The hang ups on why they didn’t say anything for so long makes perfect sense and I didn’t get frustrated with the understandable miscommunication
    – Bracing yourself for negative reactions from a person close to you and how difficult it is to change that was spot on and I liked how it wasn’t just a one and done deal
    – Elizabeth is my new favorite character
    – The author uses the word “says” a lot in scenes with dialogue and it bothered me the first time I listened to this book but not as much the second time. Feels like a forgivable mistake
    – This is the first book I’ve listened to by Anastasia Watley and she instantly is on my list of favorite narrators

Overall I can’t recommend this book enough. It’s relatable and sweet and just enough frustrating to make it all work so well together. New favorite author and new favorite narrator all in one amazing book.
