Henriette – :
Our favorite oddball couple meets murder and mayhem
Bess Campbell and Margaret Gale are a hoot: rotund, endearing ever-the-optimist Bess who gives off the best hippie vibes, and strict, tall, acerbic, no-nonsense Margaret, ever the realist-to-fault. One of the best opposite attracts, quirky couples in sapphic literature their very different views of any (!) given situation add a lot of fun to the books in Jess Lea‘s Gum Tree series (I secretly think that Jess Lea loves to let loose her snarky side).
Right off the bat we get a full dose of delightful fun with Bess and Margaret when they move into their new home. All looks well until they need to chase down a relative of Bess. In the rural town where they all end up strange happenings and a murder derail the couple‘s plan for the straight and narrow. A criminal investigation and mayhem found them again!
What I especially loved about this book was how Jess Lea digs deeper into her characters and their relationship – it‘s not all fun and giggles. And those secondary characters cover a whole gamut of human experience: from decency to deceit. I loved how Jess Lea not only had an interesting investigation going on but how she adds depth through those main and secondary characters.
But please no pink for the next days. You will discover why when reading this delightful quirky book.
