In the second part of our celebration of October Fanfiction Theme Month, we’re highlighting the other eight lesbian books of sixteen that are on special sale because of their fanfiction origins.
And, in case you missed the first blog here, this doesn’t mean these novels just swapped out character names. These are beautiful, developed, original, alternative universe books that were once based on a fanfiction, before they were shaped into outstanding novels in their own rights.
These eight books we’ve dubbed The Outsiders, for the kick-ass women who are from other worlds, have out-of-the-ordinary jobs, or just outsider mindsets.
If you liked Devil Wears Prada, you will love:
Imagine if Miranda Priestly, with all that burning ambition, intelligence, and snarky attitude, was a mysterious captive on a space station? Can you say: Sparks. Flying?
The Lily and the Crown by Roslyn Sinclair: Young botanist Ari lives an isolated life on a space station, tending a lush garden in her quarters. When an imperious woman is captured from a pirate ship and given to her as a slave, Ari’s ordered life shatters. Her slave is watchful, smart, and sexy, and seems to know an awful lot about tactics, star charts, and the dread pirate queen, Mir. A lesbian romance about daring to risk your heart.
If you liked Supergirl, you will love:
There was so much bossy Cat Grant and adoring Kara sizzle on screen, who wouldn’t want to experience it in a whole other realm…or two?
Chasing Stars by Alex K. Thorne: For superhero Swiftwing, crime fighting isn’t her biggest battle. Nor is it having to meet the whims of Hollywood star Gwen Knight as her mild-mannered assistant, Ava. It’s doing all that, while tracking a giant alien bug, being asked to fake date her famous boss, and realizing that she might be coming down with a pesky case of feelings. A fun, sweet, sexy lesbian romance about the masks we wear.
If you liked Rookie Blue, you will love:
What if Gail had gotten her wish and met Holly when she was younger? That’s a curious question that might be intriguing to explore in a charming young-adult novel.
A Story of Now by Emily O’Beirne Nineteen-year-old Claire knows she needs a life. And new friends. Too sassy for her own good, she doesn’t make friends easily anymore. And she has no clue where to start on the whole life front. At first, Robbie and Mia seem the least likely people to help her find it. But Claire finds new friends, a new self, and, with the warm, brilliant Mia, a whole new set of feelings.
If you liked Xena, you will love: Primal Touch by Amber Jacobs
Xena: Warrior Princess was ground zero for the origins of lesbian fanfiction. So is it any wonder thousands of AU stories have been sparked by the tough warrior archetype and her peace-loving friend who sees past her hurts to find the good and love in her heart? These two books tap into that heart-warming vibe.
Primal Touch by Amber Jacobs: Rumors of a rare, white tiger have lured wildlife photographer Ashley Richards deep into the Indian jungle. There, she crosses paths with a ruthless poacher and Leandra, a mysterious, feral woman, who seems at one with the fierce felines she protects. In this charged, exotic, lesbian romance, Ashley faces danger, a deadly vendetta, and the clash of two worlds, which changes everything she knows.
Once by LT Smith: Beth Chambers’s life is no fairytale. After four years in a destructive relationship, Beth decides enough is enough and leaves her girlfriend, taking Dudley, her dog, with her. At her lowest point, she meets Amy Fletcher, a woman who appears to have it all–and whom she believes would never want more than friendship. Beth needs to believe in magic once more for her dreams to come true. But can she?
If you liked The 100, you will love:
Ahh, that heated Clexa frisson, as the two went from wary strangers from different worlds to so much more. Then it was over too soon. Not in fiction, though. Wallow in a happy ending with these great reads.
Pieces by G Benson: Carmen is sixteen, homeless, and desperate to keep her and her kid brother out of foster care. Ollie, also sixteen, has a life that’s all about parents, school pressure, and friends. One kiss changes everything. Ollie is captivated, but Carmen vanishes. When they cross paths later, everything is different. A young-adult, queer romance about what we’re prepared to sacrifice for those we care about.
You’re Fired by Shaya Crabtree: When an inappropriate Secret Santa gift backfires, Rose needs her smarts to save her job, while Vivian, her sexy boss, needs her smarts to save the business. Can they stop bickering long enough to do a deal?
